P6 vs P6a modem issues, or WTF Google?

I bought a P6 through Amazon when they went on sale for $499, as a replacement for my 3a. The idea was to keep the 3a as a backup, and use the P6 as a daily driver. Then shortly afterwards Google makes the $300 trade-in offer for the 3a, and off it goes for a new P6a + A series buds. Get the P6, set it up on T-Mobile with a physical sim card, and shortly afterwards start to experience the dreaded cell modem issues that's all the rage. Now, I live in the sticks with spotty cell service but the 3a never had these issues. I did all the recommended fixes - replaced the SIM with a eSIM downloaded from T-Mobile, set service to LTE only, turned off adaptive connectivity, tweaked network settings like automatically select network, and so on. I still was getting dropped service and connections. The phone was great at everything else, except being a phone. Finally I'm fed up with it and initiate a return to Amazon (in progress, but here's to hoping). So, part 2 - I pull the P6a out of the drawer, set it up using a T-Mobile eSIM, copy data over, and start using it. I need a phone, and if it's going to have bad service at least it should be cheap. You know what? It's absolutely flawless at being a phone. Connections are rock solid using the default network settings of 5G preferred and adaptive connectivity turned on. I was fully expecting it to be just as bad as the P6 but it's perfect. It handles my weak cell service at home, switches between towers perfectly, and so far has not needed any hand holding, tweaking, cursing, or anger to make it work. I bought the Network Cell Info app when troubleshooting the P6, and right now the P6a really doesn't get a stronger signal when compared to the P6. What it does do different though is stay connected. Go figure.
