Hello r/ucla! My name is Josh Garland and I’m running for USAC Internal Vice President (IVP). I wanted to take this opportunity to introduce myself as well as share the platforms I am campaigning on. I would love to hear your feedback as well :).I’m a second year political science major and one of the current Student Involvement Directors in the IVP office. I’ve helped plan various events with the IVP including working with ASUCLA on the T-Shirt Design Contest, collaborating with Case Management Services to plan the True Bruins R.A.I.S.E. Ceremony, and putting on finals destress events. I also wanted to take the time to share some of the other things the IVP has accomplished this year including:Hosting an off-campus living fair for students interested in off-campus housingUtilizing the IVP partnership fund to help fund various student organizations and their eventsProviding housing relief to students through the IVP Housing Relief FundFacilitating the Campus Safety Alliance meetings with administration and studentsMy platforms, the “Four ‘I’s of Influence,” are focused on accessibility and student well-being. The IVP Office has a housing relief fund for students facing housing insecurity, which I would like to expand to accommodate more students. I also want to work with UCLA Housing to make housing accommodations and dining more accessible to students. Other areas I’d like to focus on as the IVP include putting on more campus events, increasing mental health resources for underrepresented students, improving USAC transparency, and increasing pre-professional opportunities.I’ve outlined my platforms and objectives below:Platform #1: Improve Housing Accessibility for StudentsImprove affordable housing options for low-income students by expanding the IVP housing relief fund and partnering with groups focused on housing insecurity to strengthen their initiativesIncrease accessibility in UCLA dining by working with student organizations to advocate for an off-campus meal plan, more certified Halal foods in dining halls, and more gluten-free alternativesIncrease accessibility to off-campus housing by hosting an off-campus housing fair and sharing off-campus housing options on IVP social mediaPlatform #2: Improve Transparency Between USAC and StudentsUplift student organizations by hosting office hours where student organizations can receive support, funding, and other resources for their projectsImprove transparency by keeping a record of all USAC council meetings on a social media account and emailing a bi-quarterly report of all USAC initiatives to the student bodyProvide students more chances to voice their opinions by opening up office hours for UCLA students to express their concerns over campus affairs directly to the USAC IVPPlatform #3: Increase Professional OpportunitiesImprove student resources by working with career center and pre-professional clubs to host workshops for students on how to study for tests such as the LSAT, MCAT, and how to apply to graduate schoolCreate more professional opportunities for students by working with the career center and pre-professional clubs to host more networking eventsCreate regular opportunities for free professional headshots through the IVP OfficeProvide students more opportunities to learn about different career paths by hosting career events with guest speakers from various fieldsPlatform #4: Increase Community Well-BeingPromote student involvement by creating more campus-wide events such as finals destress eventsImprove student safety by working with the Ashe Center to provide increased accessibility and care for students without appointmentsIncrease mental health resources by partnering with student health clubs and CAPS to host workshops on how to address mental health issues among underrepresented studentsThank you for taking the time to read my campaign introduction post, hopefully it wasn’t too long haha. I would really appreciate any feedback on my platforms, please leave a comment if you have anything! If you’re interested in following my campaign, please follow my campaign Instagram account @ josh4ivp.
