I have a Dream Machine connected to my fiber internet modem, and the UDM connects to a switch that connects pretty much everything else (wifi APs, Protect cams). If I use a flat network without any VLAN, a transfer between two PCs on the same network would bypass the UDM and just work "peer to peer" from the switch, right? What happens when I enable the firewall and create VLANs? Everything going between different VLANs now has to go through the UDM first, to apply network/firewall rules, right? Is that a performance hit worth thinking about? Are there things I should keep together on a VLAN, less for security purposes and more for speed/throughput? For example, if I get an NVR rather use the UDM, it seems like it would be dumb to have the NVR on a different VLAN than the cameras, because all of that camera streaming data would now have to pass through the UDM first and back to the switch before it gets to the NVR. Do I have that right?
