I have about 10 years of experience and have worked in 6 different companies so far [large, small, and startups].While being a Software Engineer for me has been a pretty good WLB & pay, for some reason I keep longing for more. At this point I am absolutely dreading picking up new mediocre JIRA's and designs, and discussing them with the team, and then taking 2 weeks to do that in a Sprint...yadda yadda yadda...I haven't really been able to find any good resources on Software Consulting, but most of what I have found is people leveraging their network for projects. I met these two dudes from the Bay Area that hired top engineers and deployed them to startups, and got a chunk of their hourly. They were able to do this because they had a great network. They also frequented a lot of Networking events & tried to extend their reach that way.I know that if I were able to land some type of contracts for Small to Medium businesses, I could potentially make a lot more a lot faster, and also have a lot more autonomy on how things get done. But where does one go to get these types of projects?Does it really all have to be from scratch? What should the first 10 steps be for someone in this regard? Here is what I am planning to do:Create a Website - Add a description about the services that I can provide:- Software Design & Development (Professional Services)- Technical Strategy for Startups (in-house Expert for short-term contracts)- Potentially sell something (AI side project)Reach out to recruiters online and try to pitch my services in some way.[ i have no clue where to even start about this ]????????I hear a lot of people say that getting New Gigs/Projects is the biggest pain in the ass when it comes to the independent consulting lifestyle. And I see that a Network is one of the most important things to have for this lifestyle. So - what does one do? How does one do it? Is it mostly hard work or smart work or luck? why?Is it mostly Entrepreneurial & Sales related? Does that mean that Soft Skills are a major requirement? Thanks a lot people - I hope my post doesn't come off topic or something . . .
