What was life like for early settlers heading west across the US?

I just saw American Primeval and it got me wondering about conditions of the journey west across the US for families in the 1800sI’ve got a casual understanding of things like the Oregon trail; but am having a hard time picturing it. Is this really a marked and well trod trail; or is it more of a general direction and string of towns you find by dead reckoning. How did people find these trails, replenish supplies, keep their wagons rolling, cross mountains, etc? Hoe many random houses, cabins, shelters, farms,… would you encounter? Were there guides? What do you pay a guide? Do they just do 1-2 jobs a year then? How did people communicate with those already west? Were there postal networks? Did they then follow the same trails?Any suggested books or podcasts or other sources on this would also be hugely appreciated
