Hi everyone, first time poster here but would love a bit of advice! Age: 26Location: London Experience: 1.5 years as a consultant at current consultancy, ~10 months as an analyst at a start-up, graduated from a 5 year masters in mathematics in 2021Compensation: comparable to B4 at my experience level ~£50kWork hours: 9-13 a day dependent on project, no weekend work The consultancy I work for is a boutique, it’s often technical work so I can build out a nice skillset. The consultancy has very high standards, work hard play hard culture and is well respected within the industry. Overall it has been great so far, as I have developed a lot - the company gives a lot of responsibility and exposure. The promotion cycle is every 4 months (3x a year) and there are more grades than typical consultancies have. So the usual time at each grade is between 8 months and 16 months. I have had great feedback from managers on each project I have been on, numerous times being told I am performing at the grade above. My career manager and I felt I should have had the promotion at the 14 month point but I have recently been denied promotion at the 18 month point - despite my great feedback from project manager level colleagues. Ultimately the decision is made by partners who oversee projects from a very high level. They don’t read the feedback forms but base feedback off of word of mouth and what I can only assume is the impression / rapport they get from the employee. In fact the negative feedback I got from the promotion review by partners was in complete opposition to the positive feedback I received by project managers - some feedback from partners who haven’t managed me!I have been promised a path for promotion by my career manager for the next review in 4 months if I perform well in my current project (I’m being billed at the grade above). Obviously this is not guaranteed and I’ll be 14 months behind some my peers if I do get it.The real kick in the teeth is other colleagues who started after me, and I have managed during projects got promoted while I didn’t. One thought is that my networking is not great. I don’t drink alcohol so don’t attend a lot of the pub visits and drinking socials (they make me uncomfortable) and I’m quite the introvert so often sit in the quieter floor of the office to focus. I know this plays a part but I hope it wouldn’t be a dealbreaker with great feedback. (To expand on this, I’m a confident introvert if that makes sense)Maybe I am being dramatic but I feel really demotivated, especially as I keep thinking about the sacrifices I’ve made for the job (giving up rugby due to early evening trainings, less time with my gf, working through social events, etc).I also don’t want to be flagged as a job hopper to future employers.I feel like my options are: - Look for another job now- Stick with the job to hit the two year mark, get bonus and hopefully the promotion to strap on my CV- Stay with the company Thank you for making it through - any advice is greatly appreciated!
