Background : I'm a Level 70 game-pass player who mainly plays engineer/support and dabble in SL when gaps need filling. Always admired the work a good Commander can do but never thought of myself as good enough or experienced enough to do it myself.Given that I'm on console we can't choose our servers so when you get a good game lobby you learn a lot. Commander role has always intimidated me due to the high responsibility and seemingly everyone vote kicking commanders when the going gets tough regardless of how many back-up Garrys, tanks and other resources the Commander has utilised... I've always seen successful Commanders as this kind of elite level 150+ guys who got the game when it came out on PS Plus in 2021, or have been on the ride longer than that. Their game awareness is always off the chain, and their tactics and comms are usually top quality. This has always deterred me from considering Commander - until tonight...Playing late evening in the EU servers I find myself in a game of Offensive on Stalingrad on a quiet server (14 on our attacking team and around 19 on the defending team) and nobody took the commander role for over 70% the game. I had been driving a supply truck surrounding the active point with 3 or 4 Garry's, calling out tanks and enemy Garry's but nobody in command chat was active. We had advanced up past the Train tracks onto the 4th point. Our network of Garrys and OP's were helping keep us in the battle but I started to spot enemy supplies being air-dropped which told me they had a commander and we risk being outgunned and outplayed by way of not using the 2500+ supplies we were sitting on. So I bit the bullet, redeployed to HQ and took the big scary role. And boy was it much easier than I had ever thought of. I pulled out the map and started dropping supplies to the frontline, and after a long 45 minute game with no chatter in Command chat someone finally spoke up. "Thanks for taking Commander!" - That was all I needed to hear to inspire me! I told them I've never played commander myself but have a rough idea what to do and so we got to work planning supply drops for Garry's, calling out tank positions for airstrikes, and I hopped in a half track and blasted it up the map from HQ to the frontlines just in time for us to start to cap the final point. For months I've been scared of the role and all it's responsibilities, yet in the course of a 10 minute assault I lead the small team on to victory, blew up two tanks with a precision strike and got to understand the Command role and what can be done. I'm not saying I'm going to be a Commander main from now on, but it's a great thing to know if I ever had to step in it's not as big and as scary as I've maybe made it out to be. Sorry for the wall of text but I got a lovely warm fuzzy feeling from that game, hopefully my next foray into Command (whenever that may be!) is as rewarding and exciting as my first. Feel free to share your experiences as Commander and any tips you may have for those who don't mind stepping up to the plate when theres work to be done.
