I am looking to get into the wonderful world of self hosting stuff and looking for some advice before jumping in. The initial goal I would want would be to setup a media streaming server that can be accessed remotely as my family travels quite frequently. The secondary goal would be to setup cloud storage for my family. My wife does a combination of WFH and office and pays for the apple storage(idk how much) so I could see a NAS being useful. I travel a lot for work so having a network I can keep documentation on and access anywhere would be great. I am also an amateur photographer and shoot in RAW so have quite a lot of photo's (at least 150gb total) but I take all our family photos. The third goal would be music, e-books, podcasts and any additional entertainment media. The fourth and least important goal would be to give access to my extended family; I don't know how much hardware is required once you start adding 6-10 people between US/CA.So more things to consider would be that I have a family of 4 (2 kids and 2 adults) so I would like something that has a lot of storage but I have really no idea about what the needs would be. Personally I am tech savvy-ish; I used to do programming back in the day (python) but haven't in a while so I think a simpler to setup system would be best. My wife uses iOS and I use windows, so I have multiple operating systems to deal with. My wife has very basic computer skills and is easily frustrated so it needs to be robust which I think is very important.Final notes are as far as my budget goes I would like to keep it under $1k and am fine with paying for premium Plex/Emby. Also the amount of QUALITY troubleshooting media and setup guides would be a slight factor. My current thoughts are this I can either go the Terramaster route and I believe the F4-424 with 2 8TB HDD which I think would be a good fit for my needs and give room to expand it over the years if I need to; This option I think would be around 800+tax. Option 2 would be a Synology DS224+ with 2 16TB drives. Option 3 would be a DS423+ with 2 8TB HDD which I believe would be roughly the same price as the Terramaster F4-424.Any insight is welcome. I feel like the more research I do right now the more confused I am getting.
