I have always chosen UPMC for all services, but I will not be using their mental health services ever again. It is an issue with the employees, not the policies. If you want to work at a reputable hospital and get paid extremely well for very little work, work at WPIC. They are paid as if they function at the high quality rate of other UPMC run facilities, the current staff wants more money than they are paid. I make 8.50 an hour. When I heard a nurse complain to me about making 30$ an hour for the most part to just sit down and be on a phone I was floored. If you want this job and are qualified go to UPMC and say you will take 30 dollars and not harass patients about your own problems. If you can talk to patients while keeping your own emotions and issues out of the equation you will minimally be a 1000% better than the current staff. The job description is handing out apple juice and a processed meat sandwich every couple of hours. If you are vegetarian, don’t worry just eat the meat, it’s likely not from a real animal at all. (Jk, you can also get some canned vegetables.) You will have to stand up at some points to unlock the bathroom door for patients who do not have access to such amenities otherwise. Pros: If you are a fan of Facebook or social media, you will be able to stare at your phone all day. The hardest thing you’ll have to do is call in security to handle patients with more acute symptoms. They pay 30$ an hour to sit behind a glass wall and supervise mental patients. I think UPMC is one of the most ethical organizations and providers in the country, BESIDES this defunct center, I think the administration should do a complete overhaul of its workers as they complain to patients about their pay grade. That’s inappropriate in a center you are supposed to be treating patients who are funding your pay. I’d gladly work for 20$ an hour, while the workers there can’t unglue their faces from their phones even if they were paid 50 an hour. A lot of the workers here were trained at UPMC shadyside family health practice and though it was once a very great center, the main woman who trains and supervises is retiring and the residents are poorly trained and cause financial havoc for patients. The last mental health advice I got there was to journal.Im middle aged; and I had a 20 year old resident suggest for me…to write…in a journal. I’ve kept journals my whole life. I didn’t know that advice cost patients money or was considered mental healthcare. You certainly can’t journal AT the center. You can get printed out sheets of papers with kitty cats and dogs on it to color in. They’ll bring out that broken crayon bin and some computer paper. They strap patients to beds while they are screaming or asking for reasonable accommodations. It’s disgusting. I sat in the lobby with a man who was disabled and had been arrested for stealing from a liquor store. He was an overweight black man, and the staff couldn’t have been worse towards him. He was terrified and for four hours he spoke to himself about the trauma from the police. There’s no help, just people in privileged positions at UPMC mocking those most in pain. I’m disgusted by the behavior. It was very sad to me. He was clearly suffering and needed real help. The staff mocked his weight. Another woman there was scared too and not able to reach anyone at her home as she was involuntarily hospitalized and was an older woman who just wanted to make sure someone could watch her cat. The staff laughed. As I was completely lucid and have never had a doctor involuntarily commit me in my life, none of the staff abused me. I did see a lot of abuse though. You can be assured the police and security guards there function with true empathy. Until the entitled employees at WPIC are retrained; mercy behavioral health has a wonderful staff that works with you as a patient, they don’t just shove you in a closet. Community health network is also decent. If you have better insurance I’d suggest finding a psychiatrist that has their own practice and can better meet your needs. That was one thing I was very disappointed in the shadyside family health center was the sheer lack of anyone working with my family. There were 3 people on my emergency contact list, one was even a police officer. However; they decided to call the pittsburgh police to parade me to this center in handcuffs. At my expense! I’d of much rather my friend who was a police officer to have been called, because I know he wouldn’t have handcuffed me. This is what happens when you let untrained residents run a center. If you have a passion for helping people less fortunate than you and want to live a life where you can afford to feed your family well and save towards retirement UPMC is an excellent employer. 30 dollars an hour. That means you can eat without he government supplementing your food with ebt and low income programs. I couldn’t imagine having a life that dignified and in a place that is so crucial to society and getting people back on their feet. It needs to be done with respect, not something WPIC serves. If people are treated like cattle it will only make them feel worthless. I am not from this state and my care has primarily been out of PA. One thing I will say is the combined centers with physical and mental healthcare though it seems appealing, it actually makes both of lesser quality care to patients. Not better. No care is coordinated better because of this arrangement. In fact it’s been the most blundering set up. I would not ever combine care again. The organization of this office was completely absent. I’m not sticking around Pennsylvania to watch anymore UPMC employees pout at their boss that is providing them a lifestyle they don’t appreciate and openly bash their employers to the public.
