REPOST: I’m reposting this because there are certain identities which this subreddit doesn’t allow specific mention of, and the moderators rightly removed my first post because of this. My first post mistakenly mentioned these identities directly. If your comments touch on these specific identities, I will not be engaging with you so I can keep this post up, and I will report the comment. I want this discussion to happen, and be fruitful.Basically the title. Imagine the most underprivileged intersection of identities you can imagine, excluding class, and compare that against the most privileged intersection of identities you can imagine, excluding class.Definition of class (according to Wikipedia): "A social class or social stratum is a grouping of people into a set of hierarchical social categories, the most common being the working class, middle class, and upper class. Membership of a social class can for example be dependent on education, wealth, occupation, income, and belonging to a particular subculture or social network."https://ift.tt/fhjGYLA of privilege (according to Wikipedia): "Social privilege is an advantage or entitlement that benefits individuals belonging to certain groups, often to the detriment of others. Privileged groups can be advantaged based on social class, wealth, education, caste, age, height, skin color, physical fitness, nationality, geographic location, cultural differences, ethnic or racial category, gender, gender identity, neurodiversity, physical disability, sexual orientation, religion, and other differentiating factors."https://ift.tt/TXYcDuq of intersectionality (according to Wikipedia): "Intersectionality is a sociological analytical framework for understanding how groups' and individuals' social and political identities result in unique combinations of discrimination and privilege. Examples of these factors include gender, caste, sex, race, ethnicity, class, sexuality, religion, disability, height, physical appearance, age, and weight. These intersecting and overlapping social identities may be both empowering and oppressing."https://ift.tt/VEZvicU chief claim: Excluding class, there is no intersectionality of underprivileged identities which outweigh the benefits of being in the upper class of American Society. Notes:"Intersectionality hampers the ability for underprivileged identities to attain a place in the upper class!" I already know and accept this as fact. My take isn't that identity discrimination and privilege disparities aren't real- my take is that the privilege held by working class people is laughably unequal compared to privilege held by anyone that can be considered upper class."Intersectional disparities in privilege within the upper class are real!" Again, I already know and accept this as fact. But that is a false equivalency in my mind- sure, upper class people with underprivileged identities will face more difficulty relative to their upper class peers, but they categorically still enjoy more total social privilege compared to the greatest privilege attainable by the middle class. To be clear, I am of the mind that the social privilege disparity between the upper and middle class is not close. To directly define the benefits of social privilege: “How easy it is for you to live a stable, fulfilling, happy life in American society compared to others with a different amount of social privilege.”
