They Break the Rules for Their Friends but Suddenly Care About Policy When It Affects Me.

Here’s some background- I’ve worked at a nonprofit since 2020 and used to really love my job. That all changed when we got a new leadership team in 2022. Ever since, it’s been a steady decline.First, the new CEO brought his wife in. Then she brought in a bunch of her friends and acquaintances as directors. They got rid of our HR department and outsourced it to a company the CEO just happens to have stock in. When that got too expensive, they brought HR back in-house, and of course, it’s someone connected to them. Basically, the leadership is now just a group of people from the same network and former colleagues.Recently one of the new chiefs (Michael) decided to restructure my department. He demoted my boss (the director) to manager, then out of four specialists (me and three others), two were let go. The two of us left were told we had to choose between two roles. One of them is basically the same position but with the workload of four people and no increase in pay. We were also told we should be grateful we’re even keeping our same pay. Then Michael decided to hire a new director for our department. HR sets up an interview within days of the restructuring announcement. It’s weird because we don’t have a job posting board (stopped paying for it) How did we get an applicant so quick?Surprise: the candidate is Michael’s ex-boss and someone he’s known for years. He gets hired and will start basically immediately.Meanwhile, I heard about an opening in another department (Compliance & Safety Risk) about a month ago. It’s not a super high-level role, and the director (John) and I get along well. I apply, interview, and it goes great. John wants me to join right away.He tells HR and leadership. Another chief immediately gets pissed. Why? Because they expected me to take one of the two BS roles they shoved at me earlier. Now suddenly HR wants to “follow protocol.” They tell John the job has to be announced to the whole organization(internal posting, email blast, one-week wait before hiring, etc). None of that happened for Michael’s buddy, or any other role filled by their people. To top it off, I now have to go through even more interviews for this job I’m qualified for, including one with the CEO.It’s clear they only care about rules when it’s inconvenient for them. I’m already looking for other jobs. I’m done.
