Personally I think that within the lore, these two factions have absolutely no reason to exist, and very few of the races in them have much reason to be.I think it would be cool if, within an expansion or across a three expansion arc, the Alliance and Horde collapsed or broke up. How it could work with GameplayCreate a phased version of the major cities for people playing through this expansion, wherein anyone can go to any city and any zone (so there are no Horde or Alliance zones). However, they will need to use a Bronze dragon to go back in time if they want to quest in old zones. I think this could be a good feature of a more expanded 'Expansion select' system. Like how you have the option of levelling through a specific expansion when you create a new character.Anyone can communicate, group, and chat with anyone. For older PvP battlegrounds, keep players Alliance and Horde (because those are set in the past) whereas newer battlegrounds could be randomly sorted. As for War Mode, let people choose a side, and there are bonuses for choosing the weaker side at any point in time. How these factions could workThe obvious choice is to base them on the Class Halls, but instead of class, they are ideological factions that exist within azeroth. So they would have their own base, their own storyline which goes throughout the expansion (or even multiple expansions), their own mounts/mogs, etc. But NO power should be tied to them. Or if it is, then it should be the same system across all factions. People loved the idea of Covenants, because they wanted to be able to choose a path for their character that was based on aesthetics and roleplay. The issue was that the Covenants were power based, and the player was really locked into them. Plus they weren't really grounded in the lore of Azeroth, and there weren't many characters that felt like natural fits for any covenant. But there was clearly a lot of interest in the idea, if done right. Rather than just have isolated storylines, they could make the whole story about how these factions intermingle and work with/against each other.Which faction you can choose will be determined by your race or class. Each race will have certain factions it fits with, and certain races that must always be allowed to join that faction. You could have certain class-race combos that aren't allowed to join certain factions. Potential factions - These are just complete hypotheticals to give you an idea. The Silver Hand - Holy order devoted to justice and the light. Upright and interventionist. Very active in intervening with the other factions based on their idea of what is right. A rigid hierarchical theocracy governed by a council.*Classes: Paladin, Priest, *Races: Lightforged Draenei, Draenei, Human (Unless they are Warlock, Death Knight, Rogue, Hunter, Monk)The Circle of Renewal - A Nature-bound coalition that is dedicated to restoring balance through harmony with nature. Isolationist and traditional. They are generally peaceful but absolutely willing to fight to protect the world. Ruled by a tribal confederation of elders.*Classes: Druid, Evoker, Hunter, Monk, Shaman *Races: Night Elves, Tauren, Highmountain, Earthen, Dracthyr, Pandaren (Unless they are Death Knight, Mage, Warlock)The Shadowbound - A coalition based on the exploration of dark arts and ideas which would be considered unacceptable in any other society. They are motivated by control and power. Governed by a council of powerful individuals who hold on to their positions through fear and respect.Classes: Death Knight, Demon Hunter, Warlock, Rogue, MageRaces: Undead, Nightborne, Void Elves, Blood Elves, Troll (Unless they are Warrior, Hunter, Monk, Paladin)The Arcane Expedition - A magic based technocratic faction that seek progress through knowledge and mastery. Rationalist and amoral. Ruled by a powerful mage who answers to an elected board.Classes: Mage, Priest, Warlock, EvokerRaces: Blood Elves, Void Elves, Gnomes, Nightborne, Draenei (Unless they are Warrior, Rogue, Hunter, Monk)The Iron Brotherhood - A faction of 'noble savages' who believe in honour and strength. Basically the original premise of the Horde. Militaristic and pragmatic. They are suspicious of dishonorable people and acts. Led by a high chieftain chosen through combat or consensus.Classes: Druid, Hunter, Shaman, Warrior, MonkRaces: Orcs, Mag’har, Zandalari, Dracthyr, Pandaren, Trolls, Tauren (Unless they are Warlock, Death Knight, Mage, Rogue)The Under-Network - An espionage-based faction of spies, assassins and thieves that thrive in secrecy and try to manipulate the world from the shadows. They are motivated by obscure goals, coin, and influence. No formal governance, decentralised and controlled through leverage and deals.*Classes: Demon Hunter, Hunter, Priest, Rogue, Warlock, Warrior *Races: Goblins, Vulpera, Orcs (Unless they are Paladin, Mage)The Free Citizens - Anarchists, rebels and mercenaries who reject gods, kings, and governments in favour of personal agency. They have no true leader and are joined by their common desire for independence and freedom. They fight for coin, chaos and themselves. No government, decisions (when they are made at all) are done through votes.Classes: AnyRaces: AnyThe Upright Order - Followers of law, government, and fair ideals. Basically the original goal of the alliance. They are interventionist and civilised. Controlled by an elected government.Classes: Mage, Paladin, Priest, Warrior, DruidRaces: Human, Dwarves, Worgen, Draenei (Unless they are Death Knight, Demon Hunter, Warlock, Rogue)The Aspirants – Technocrats. They are motivated by non-magical technology as a means of progress. Classes: Hunter, Monk, Rogue, WarriorRaces: Mechagnomes, Gnomes, Goblins (Unless they are Death Knight, Evoker, Shaman, Priest)The Covenant of the End - Basically the outright evil faction. They reject life, light, nature and order. They are motivated by personal power alone, and take joy in causing chaos and death. Ruled through fear by the strongest, who control the weakest through fear and zealotry.Classes: Death Knight, Demon Hunter, WarlockRaces: Undead, Dark Iron Dwarves, Void Elves (Unless they are Paladin, Priest, Druid, Shaman)So for example, if you rolled a Human Mage, you could join the Silver Hand, the Upright Order, the Shadowbound or Arcane Expedition. If you rolled a Night Elf Death Knight, you could join the Shadowbound, or the Covenant of the End.The goal would be that each faction only contained class/race combos that made sense within the lore.
