Here is some simple math for upper management:When you have enough staff to manage 5 major IT projects well and you give them 20, it doesn’t increase productivity. It only increases frustration and the number of mistakes that happen. All 20 projects are drawn out with splintered attention given and successes come by meagerly.When you don’t offer industry standard wages you get people who are desperate for a job, under-skilled or not motivated. There is no sense to be angry they cannot perform at the level you want them to.It takes an average of 1 to 1.5 years to ramp up to a technical position. This is because every organization has different technology that is implemented differently. Your staff needs time to learn and breath and think. IT is a SCIENCE. New technical staff cannot be effective for some time, unless you are big enough to be able to hire specialists (network, security, Citrix, etc).There is a difference between managing systems and knowing them. If you have only 1 systems engineer for an organization of 250 employees and you keep adding systems, you will have:Areas where no one really understands the systemDeferred maintenance, leading to failures when components become out of date with each other.Systems bleed, where other departments need to take on their own management. Non-technical staff managing systems leads to more systems misconfiguration and non-maintenance.Neglected security practices, leading to vulnerabilitiesYour systems engineer will cease to be able to learn anything besides how to put out fires. Engineering requires thoughtfulness, deep investigation and care, all things which cannot happen without quiet time.Working at breakneck speed, your engineer will experience cognitive disintegration over a long period of time, resulting in more mistakes and less configuration documentation. They will start to hate you.Your systems engineer will become aware that they are stagnating and leave. Have fun with the next one. See point 3.Thank you for listening.
