How does Mastodon work?

Hai Guyz,So after being on Facebook since 2007, I decided to migrate to another social network. I was somewhat expecting Mastodon to be a clone of Facebook minus the invasive ads. However, it just feels so empty. I use Facebook to keep in touch with Army buddies and family members.
