Can you help an old lady understand domain registration and email hosting?

I'm pretty sure I'm paying too much for domain registration and email hosting, because my accounts come with services I don't need anymore. I don't even know for certain if I can get just the services I need without having to buy them in a package with stuff I don't. I've tried to shop around, but I have only a minimal grasp of the terminology and options available. Can someone please help me understand what I should be looking for, and what I can do without?Back in the stone age of the web, I registered a domain. I've used it since then for my primary personal email account. For a few years, I also had a website there--not a business, strictly a hobby project. I finally took it down because I didn't have time to keep it updated. I won’t be putting it up again. My domain is still registered with Network Solutions. When I first got it, they were the only option, and inertia has made me leave it there. Likewise, I still have the shared hosting package I've always had with HostGator—even after I took down my website, I kept the same plan and just used it for my email. What would be the most economical way to keep my domain registered and have my email hosted—ideally, by the same company? I've been Googling, but most of the advice and sales pitches I’ve found are aimed at businesses that need more far bells and whistles than I do—more storage, many email addresses, shared contacts and calendars, etc. I just need a minimal amount of storage, and one email address for my own use. Spam filtering and virus protection on their end would be good, but I have those on my end, too. The service I get will need to be compatible with Apple Mail on my Mac and iPhone, and also offer a webmail option.I know you can’t recommend specific companies here, but can anyone help me cut through the verbiage and tell me what to look for--the kind of account and services I need, and what I don't need and shouldn't be paying for? Thanks in advance!
