Disclaimers:We have both lived in NYC before so we are familiar with itTech jobs everywhere are bad right now and a lot of work is remoteI'm not an authority on this information, just asking for advice so if I'm wrong about something please let me know We both have jobs (I'm a working artist and he is a contract tech worker) but we want to look for new work in the area we live in as well. We are queer and one of our biggest gripes is that there isn't a lot of community where we live. New YorkNeighborhoods: Astoria, Bed-Stuy, Bushwick, Sunnyside, LIC, Ridgewood, etc. But we are also looking further out into the very edges of the boroughs out of necessity. Queer Community: great - it's New York Trans Healthcare: great - New York is one of the best states to be queer in Tech Jobs: as good as they can be right now, and probably one of the best places in the country to be if you're trying to find a tech job Artist Grants / Performances: some of the best in the country. opportunity abounds and networking is everywhere. probably one of the best places to be if you're an artist trying to broaden your scope. Affordability: It's a madhouse. We can barely even get our foot in the door in this current rental climate. I have been in contact with nearly 500 properties and we are no closer to finding a place. Prices are insane ($2-4k for a 1 bedroom in areas listed) BROKER prices are insane (anywhere from 1 month rent to 15% annual rent), and the cat-friendly apartments at the TOP of our budget ($2500/mo) are often < 500/600 sq ft and have pest infestations. There are very few places that will rent to us, and what we CAN find is getting scooped up before we even have a chance. They want 3 years of tax, a full year of paystubs, your kidney, etc, just to *show* you the place. Safety: NYC is actually generally pretty safe, in the right areas. We've both lived there before and we know where to go and where not to go.PhillyNeighborhoods: West Philly, South Philly-- people keep telling us Fishtown but that is definitely a bit straighter and richer of a place than we are used to. Not sure what neighborhoods, open to hearing. Queer Community: from what I understand, it's pretty good. I'm not sure how safe it is for trans people who are visibly queer, and would love to hear. Trans Healthcare: not sure but PA is a red state and I'm concerned Tech Jobs: honestly no clue, would love to hear Artist Grants / Performances: from what I understand, there is a really vibrant artistic community in philly that is more tightly knit than NYC and I like that about it. I could still travel to performances in NYC it would just be kind of hard. Affordability: Night and day. Amazing apartments go for LESS than the slummy apartments in NYC, even in the outer parts of Brooklyn and Queens where you need a car to get to the train. It's actually shocking. What goes for $2k in Philly would go for $4k in Bed-Stuy, easily, if not more. There are gorgeous apartments in what I think (?) are decent areas for like $1600. Safety: from what I understand, it is NOT SAFE. Each friend I've talked to has been like "just stay on your literal block and don't go outside at night and it'll be fine" which is stressful if you don't know the area. Philly's violent crime is twice NYC's, and the murder rate is 4x. Obviously this varies area by area but because people are stressing to me how dangerous it is, I'm wary.Jersey CityNeighborhoods: Are there sub neighborhoods in jersey city? let me know! Queer Community: Unsure Trans Healthcare: unsure but NJ just passed protections for gender affirming care!!! Tech Jobs: Unsure Artist Grants / Performances: not sure about grants (NJ is probably third here, and because they require residency for most grants this is significant) but the commute to New York is almost nothing and other performance/networking opportunities apply. Affordability: Way closer to NYC's prices than to Philly's. Much more likely to find a place easily in our budget due to less competition, but the market doesn't get much *cheaper*. Safety: completely ignorant about thisI would love to hear anybody's thoughts. We are really struggling mentally where we currently live, and are trying to move this year.
