As a kid he was a common thief, stealing from merchant stands so he and his mother could eat at night. He ran with a gang of common criminals. After many years of doing this, his mother soon fell ill and with no medical help she died within a fortnight. In 252 AC, with no family left, Rivers made his way to Raventree Hall where he revealed himself as the bastard born son of Brandon Blackwood. He was almost executed, as Lord Edmyn believed he was lying, but Lady Betha took his side and changed Edmyn’s mindMarq was forever grateful and bent the knee to Betha, saying from here on out he was her sworn shield and would protect her till his very last breath, and do whatever she wished.A couple years later, Betha gives Marq a job that only he can know about. At night, Marq slips into Lord Edmyn’s room and delivers the poison “powdered greycap” into his mouth. He watches as Lord Edmyn chokes to death on his own blood and can do nothing about it but reach out for MarqIn the early hours of the morning of the next day, Marq catches the Maester doing his routines and kills him, stabbing a broadsword through his chest. Marq leaves him on the steps of the hall.After gaining her full trust, Betha tells Marq her secrets, saying her witchcraft is what caused Edmyn to get sick in the first place and has been keeping him sick, but alive enough. He swears she is lying to him and not telling the truth. Calling her a madwoman and insane. Betha asks for Marq to outstretch his hand, then she cuts his hand with a knife. Marq watches as Betha uses his blood and heals the wound. He is astonishedMarq swears to Betha in front of the Great Weirwood Tree that he will not tell another living soul of what he had learned about Betha, nor the actions that had taken place that day.
