This isn't some I'm a weirdo with social anxiety post, this is just me looking for some advice on how to navigate the remaining months at my small program. It’s a nightmare. It’s like high school drama dialed up with way more money and ambition. Everyone’s constantly talking behind each other’s backs, and the whole place is split into these two groups that can’t stand each other.Group A. They’re just there to get their degree, keep their heads down, land a good job, and get out. That's me. They’re all about just doing the work, you know? But then there’s Group B... and man, these people are a whole other level. They want to control everything, every single club, every event, every project. They’re everywhere. They have these little power plays where they’ll spread gossip, (even to hopeful new admits about who to avoid and spreading rumors, very unprofessional), drop ‘helpful hints’ to professors about each other, and try to sabotage people’s projects. You’d think they’d band together since they all want to ‘lead,’ but nope. They’re at each other’s throats, too. Even the "friend" groups inside the big group don't actually like each other, and will bad mouth another. Now, myself and the rest of Group A, most of the time, we’re trying to avoid this, but it’s hard when Group B keeps trying to rope them in. They’ll start these rumors about someone from Group A being ‘lazy’ or not ‘committed to the program.’ It’s like, just because they don’t want to be club presidents doesn’t mean they’re not doing the work, you know? And when you pull these people aside and try to have a conversation with them, to tell them to stop doing this, you are enemy 1, and labeled as such. Group B thinks running the clubs and ‘networking’ is the whole point of being there. They’re constantly scheming. They’ll even ‘befriend’ Group A people just to get inside info or see if they can sway them into their little drama circle. The way it plays out is ridiculous. We had a case competition last week, and people were literally sabotaging each other’s presentations, deleting files, telling judges these sly half-truths to throw others off. One guy in "Group B" told a judge that someone’s model was ‘likely inaccurate’ just to mess with his score!I just want to get my degree and get out without all that mess. It’s just not worth it. But even that has its own issues because Group B keeps trying to paint us as ‘underachievers’ or ‘people who don’t care about the school.’ Meanwhile, we’re the ones just trying to keep it together without the drama. And if you don’t want to play along, you’re the enemy. It’s just crazy to think that these are the people I’ll be seeing in big companies soon. Makes me wonder what the corporate world’s actually going to be like.
