I'm working on a game at the moment, set in a world with a fundamental substance - temporarily called wrel. This is found in everything, and it's basically glue that holds reality together.However, it also comes in crystal form, because who doesn't like some big glowing rocks? Concentrations of wrel allow a warping effect on reality, via a "Paradoxical Reaction" - putting energy into the substance causes more of the same energy to come out - so, heat it, and it keeps getting hotter. Run an electric current through it, and you get back many times what you put in. The same with magnetism, gravity, etc. Wrel is consumed here, but very, very slowly, sort of like a radioisotope. There's ways of manipulating it to reverse these fields, so could produce antigravity, extreme cold, reversed magnetic fields, etc. lack of wrel leads to immense storms, that strip matter from the world, generating wrel in the process.I've got mostly how it's used in technology sorted, but I'm trying to work out what it'd do to ecology - so far, I have:Wrel Bees - Giant bees, that harvest wrel from plants. They use it to heat and light their surroundings, causing runaway plant growth. They also use it to keep themselves airborne, and in defence, essentially setting themselves on fire and diving, red hot, towards the target.Plants that harvest wrel from the soil, and grow their roots into rocks, infusing the rocks until they become airborne, to spread their seedsPrehaps some sort of magnetic armadillo, that pulls stuff towards it to make armor? Does anyone have interesting ideas for creatures that would develop to use this sort of substance? I'm a big environmental sciences nerd, so would love my sort of ecological network to reflect some of the bizzare real world creatures\ Sorry if this isn't the right post for here!
